Mayor Gary Exner was among the "jailbirds" who took time out of their busy schedules to raise funds for the worthy cause. Friends and associates helped bail Exner and the other "kid- ney crooks" out of the mock-up jail at the Chahko-Mika Mall - but not before they'd served their time. The event was part of BC's "Round Up for Research" held last Wednesday & Thursday at the Chahko-Mika Mall. Used by the Kidney Foundation in 27 communities around the province, this lively western theme is a fundrais- ing event bringing local business own- ers or "Top Guns" to jail. The realtors of Re/Max played the important role of Sheriff & Posse by rounding up the guilty culprits who were then taken to face the "Hanging Judge." Given a stiff bail sentence, each des- perato spent a minimum of one hour behind bars phoning all their contacts getting the needed pledges. Although all the totals are yet to be finalized, the two day event raised $15,624. This came from 33 participants making endless calls, often to the same business. This money will help our local kid- ney patients with transportation and accommodation costs when traveling, Retired Judge Stewart Endertonhas heard the word uguilty" more than a few times during his career, but this time he was able to throw the book away, as they say in courtroomcircles. HangingJudge Endertonsentenced Mayor Gary Exnerto time served for the crime of grabbing too many photo opps and as well as funding medical research, spendingtoo muchtime at City Hall. Exner proved to be a model prisoner, but there's no guarantee he won't be a repeat offender when the Kidney organ donation and other patient ser- Foundationholds its annual uget into jail" fundraiser again next year. All for a good cause, and no one gets out of jail for free in this game. vices.
