Experience Profile – Jennifer Deol

My name is Jennifer and I am a graduate student at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver campus in the Master’s of Library and Information Sciences program at the iSchool.

Although I come from Vancouver, I was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley in Oliver, BC. Upon graduating high school, I went off to Vancouver to study and have been there since. I was thrilled when this opportunity for a co-op in Kelowna came up and it aligns with my interests in making the region’s local history accessible and visible. I am looking forward to connecting with our partners and local museums, archives and historical sites to learn more about the work of local heritage institutions.

Previous to my Masters degree, I graduated from UBC Vancouver with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and after graduation I worked for local environmental non-profits supporting communications, administrative work and running public programs. I hope to bring some of my experiences in project management, research and communications skills to the project!

In my role with DOH, I will support the work of our undergraduate students to scan and digitize archival materials and get them up on the digital repository. I will also be a liaison for the team on our site visits and perform quality control on our edited images including the creation of metadata for each of the scans to make them easier to find online. I will also be managing our social media channels.

In information sciences, we have learned about the management of information and making it easier for people to discover and access what they are looking for so I look forward to applying what I have learned in the classroom to the DOH project. I am also looking forward to diving deeper into the history of the region I grew up in!

You can follow some of my work on our social media channels starting this Fall 2018! If you have any questions for me, or feedback on the usability of our website, please leave a comment or get in touch with us.
