Excerpt from page 24 of "B.C.'s Inland Empire" by Erskine Burnett associated with this image: Continuing our journey along the main highway from Squilax we find that Little Shuswap Lake and the main lake are joined by Little River (see map). Here you see the Shuswap country at its best. There is an ever-changing panorama of lake and river and wooded slope. The sombre green of fir and pine and cedar is relieved by the bright green of poplar and bitch. The undergrowth of vine maple, wild rose and willow is luxuriant and in early June tiger-lilies, penstemmon and Indian paintbrush fill the open spaces by the roadside. The blue flowers of clematis are seen on creepers climbing over the undergrowth. This clematis is not plentiful anywhere and the only other place we remember seeing it is on Bluenose Mountain, east of Vernon, with care it may be successfully transplanted.
