Excerpt from page 89 of "B.C.'s Inland Empire" by Erskine Burnett associated with this image: A feature of the Kelowna Road is the spring show of sunflowers generally at their best during the last week of April. These flowers are in evidence all the way from the Adams Lake district to near the border, but nowhere in such abundance as along the Kelowna Road. "Sunflower" is of course a local name but there does not seem to be any more distinctive one in general use. Its Linnaean classification of Balsamorhiza Sagittata Compositae is rather a tongue-twister. Flowers and other objects in nature, pertaining to the "Sun God", have long been used as part of a ritual in many parts of the world to welcome the Awakening of Spring and local Indians are said to use this flower in connection with the coming of age dedication of their young men.
